Battery And Storage Devices: What Are Its Useful Purposes

Energy storage is done through devices that store energy to perform useful operation at a later time. A device that stores energy is sometimes called an accumulator. Storing energy allows humans to balance the supply and demand of energy. Energy storage systems in commercial use today can be broadly categorized as mechanical, electrical, chemical, biological and thermal. An early solution to the problem of storing energy for electrical purposes was the development of the battery as an electrochemical storage device. Batteries have previously been of limited use in electric power systems due to their relatively small capacity and high cost. However, newer battery technologies have been developed that can now provide significant utility scale load-leveling capabilities

Batteries can be used in various forms such as:

Automobile Battery

An automotive battery is a type of rechargeable battery that supplies electric energy to an automobile. Usually this refers to an SLI battery (starting, lighting, and ignition) to power the starter, motor and the lights, and the ignition system of a vehicle’s engine.

Purpose of the battery

The battery supplies energy when

  • Engine is off: Electricity from the battery is used to operate lighting, accessories or other electrical systems when the engine is not running.
  • Engine is starting: Electricity from the battery is used to operate the starter motor and provide current for the ignition system during engine cranking. Starting the car is the battery’s most important function.
  • Engine is running: Electricity from the battery may be needed to supplement the charging system when the vehicle’s electrical load requirements exceed the charging system’s ability to produce electricity. Both the battery and the alternator supply electricity when the demand is high.
  • The tubular batteries are used in the following applications: UPS systems where power demand is for longer period, Inverters under same conditions, Solar PV systems, Telecom applications - both Base stations and at Repeater stations, Backup systems in power stations and Sub stations and Switch yards, Railways signaling use, etc
  • Lead–acid batteries, invented in 1859 are the oldest type of rechargeable battery.
  • A rechargeable battery storage battery or accumulator is a group of one or more electrochemical cells. They are known as secondary cells because their electrochemical reactions are electrically reversible. Rechargeable batteries come in many different shapes and sizes, ranging anything from a button cell to megawatt systems connected to stabilize an electrical distribution network.

Take home tip:

Rechargeable batteries have lower total cost of use and environmental impact than disposable batteries. Some rechargeable battery types are available in the same sizes as disposable types. Rechargeable batteries have higher initial cost, but can be recharged very cheaply and used many times.
